when they were new they didnt cost that/they are not collectible/would not buy that underpowered stove/didnt like them new and certainly not now/should have called them cock roaches instead of beetles/0 to 60 in a week and entirely not controllable at hiway speeds/have to keep them wound up cause they cant recover for miles if they slow down/drafty noisy death traps is a good description
References :
Take a mechanic or someone who knows about the type of car your buying.

Its a lot of money to pay for something that's 40 years old which may need work on it.

Join a VW Bug / Beetle forum site & ask advice before buying, probably save you a whole lot of trouble.

If the sellers genuine they won't mind the extra check & if they want the sale then too right they should meet you half way.

Your not being unreasonable, its common sense, otherwise get your money & set fire to it!

I just recently traveled 750 miles (there & back) to view & buy a car, so 40+ miles - what you complaining about.

Sometimes you've got to venture out, as you don't seem to find good things on your doorstep.

All the best.
References :
Common Sense

You are unreasonable. You are buying a 40 year old car for just 4 grand and this dude has already driven 40 miles to sell it. Get a shop close to the car to look at it, bring a mechanic to it or take a chance on it. Even if you do spend a grand to fix it, you still got a good deal if it is good shape. If you really want this bug jump on it, because he will sell it to someone else or get tired of listening to your demands.
