I never had an opportunity to read Secret Wars when it first came out, as I was probably just learning how to read at the time. So I had the unfortunate experience of reading it much later in life. If you read it for the first time later, you must go back upon it with like reading some historical document, not for its quality. Though the overall idea was neat, and there was some good plot devices and points with important repercussions, new characters, costumes, and romances, it still was poor 1980's writing. Some of the lines have already been mentioned, but some of it was just horrible. As one of the first major crossovers ever in comic history and filled with many classic characters it was good, but as a read only so-so.
References :
The best thing to come out of Secret Wars was Spidey's black costume, whch turned out to be a sentient alien and eventually became Venom.
References :
I read Secret Wars as it came out, and found it quite enjoyable. I was, after all, a kid, and the notion of all those heroes and villains together in one series was very exciting. Spider-Man getting a new costume? Awesome!

I read it again last year, and needless to see, it didn't hold up well at all. Hokey dialogue, terrible art in places, and a contrived plot that had more holes in it than one of my moth-eaten shirts up in attic. That said, there were still some entertaining parts, not the least of which being Doom's contstant comedic foil, Klaw. His incoherent babblings caused Doom to utter perhaps the greatest line of the series: "So. I've created a madman. SIGH."
References :
That and DC Comics' "Crisis On Infinite Earths" are the two main reasons I quit reading mainstream comics in 1985 after nearly 20 years. "Secret Wars" sucked @$$!
References :
No longer a brainwashed fanboy.

How many of you have read SECRET WARS? Did you like it?
Secret Wars came out in May 1984 and was completed in April 1985. This was a 12 part series, monthly issue, more pages than a normal monthly comic book. One of the best of Marvel Comics! If you're a fan, you must read SECRET WARS!
