well you could use shrink wrap (used for shipping) that would not ruin the paint. how about Limburger cheese on the muffler/catalytic converter
References :
I always preferred vaseline on the bottom/back-side of the door handles. it doesn't ruin anything and takes FOREVER to remove lol. I don't recommend saran wrap. If it stays for a period of time it could ruin the paint.

If you don't mind making your buddy spend some cash to get his car running again (without ACTUALLY causing damage to the car) buy a box of tampons and stuff them in his gas tank. the tampons will absorb the gas and expand, preventing fuel from getting to the engine (like it ran out of gas) but the guage will still read as full. When the mechanic sees that the gas guage is full but not running, he should think "bad fuel pump" and drop the tank. Noticing the tank doesn't 'slosh' with gas he should find the tampons and remove them and clean the tank. Im not sure how much the mechanic will charge, but one back home for me (about 15 years ago) did this and only charged my buddy about $50. If you are thinking about doing this, I would make a cold-call to a shop in your area and merely inquire how much it would cost for a tank to be cleaned and when you get your verbal estimate make your decision
